My journaling about our middle dog Mookie for the challenge.

Journaling Reads: You came to live with us just after your first birthday. We didn't know it at the time, but found out a few days later when we called your old vet to get some information for your new vet. I had gone to PetSmart to ge milk bone for Bart. The girls and I stopped to visit with the dogs and puppies the local Humane Society had brought to the store that day. When I reached down to pet you, you cowered in the corner. You were so scared. You also reminded me of Bart when we got him. He had been just as scared the first time I saw him in the cage. We got the biscuits and went home. On the way home the girls and I decided to talk to dad to see if we could get a second dog. He wasn't to keen on the idea at first, but you talked him into it. We all went back to get Mookie and this October, it will be 8 years since we made the trip back to PetSmart. I am so glad we went back. I wouldn't have wanted to miss the last 8 years. We found out you had a pretty rough life by the time you were 1. You had been in the Humane Society twice. This second time when we took you home you had been there for over 2 weeks! It meant you were pretty close to the end of your life if you didn't find a family. In your first year, you also suffered from abuse, too. I don't know what happened to you, but you were pretty much afraid of everything--brooms, hard hats, motorcycles--the list was endless. The one thing I knew for sure, if I ever found out who did this to you, I'd do the same thing to them! You became less afraid and more trusting as you learned we loved you and you were safe. It took a while for you and Bart to learn to get along, but eventually you became the best of buddies. It was so much fun to watch the two of you play together, you both brought us many hours of happiness and laughter. But, it is also why I think you became so depressed when Bart passed away last Spring. You walked around the house looking so sad and depressed. You didn't seem to quite know what to do with yourself. I had wanted to wait for a bit longer before we thought about getting a new dog, but we all knew you would die of a broken heart if we didn't do something. Now you have a younger brother named Artie. You love Artie as much as you loved Bart. We have loved every minute of your life with us and can't wait to see what else is to come!

Such a wonderful story. I'm so glad you went back for Mookie. It makes me so happy when animals from abused backgrounds get to experience love and caring from those of us who do care. TFS
