Journaling: The Amish, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, were not quite what I had imagined. So much of the rest of the world’s development and technology have changed the area where these “Plain Folk” live, but we still saw acres and acres of mule-planted crops, dairy farms run by propane - no electricity, but they DO have indoor plumbing!, and adorably curious Amish children on homemade scooters or pony-led carts. We really enjoyed our Amish buggy ride, narrated by Caleb, who is 19 and, after his Rumspringa, has decided not to continue in the Amish ways. I asked him what values from the Amish way he still cherishes. His answers were the strong sense of family and community, as well as respect for - and harmony with - the land. They also made the yummiest ice cream, cheese and pretzels we’re ever eaten!
